Shelby County Rolls Out New Mobile Friendly Tag and Boat Renewal Website
8/13/2014

Columbiana, AL – Shelby County and Ingenuity, Inc. are pleased to announce the launch of a new website designed for mobile devices that Shelby County residents can use to easily and quickly renew their automobile and boat registrations.  This site was designed for use with iPhones and iPads, as well as Android and Windows Mobile devices.

A QR code, which is a special type of barcode that can be read by smartphones and other mobile devices, has been added to Shelby County’s monthly renewal reminder mailings to make accessing the site from smart phones and other mobile devices very simple.  Residents can either scan the code with a QR Reader on their smartphone/mobile device or just log on to https://license.shelbyal.com via their mobile device.

“Over the last 12 months, close to 20% of all Shelby County registration renewals have been completed over the web” said Bill Glass, Supervisor of License Operations at Shelby County.  “We have seen a significant increase in the amount of renewals done on smartphones and other mobile devices over the last few years, especially in the last year.”

Shelby County COO Phil Burns added, “Shelby County is always evaluating new opportunities to make working with the County easier and this is a great opportunity to take advantage of the rising popularity of mobile computing.”  According to Burns, this is another step in leveraging technology to simplify residents’ interactions with the County.

“We wanted to develop the most flexible and secure solution possible while still delivering the simple and easy to use feel of an App” said Daniel Huggins, Application Division Manager at Ingenuity.  “Instead of building an App for each type of phone platform, we decided the best approach was a mobile site where the residents can simply visit a website instead of having to download an App from their App Store.”  According to Huggins, the new website is more secure than a comparable App and is easier to maintain and enhance as new features are added.  The new website also integrates to the existing Ingenuity Licensing and Registration software used by the County, making the back-office processing of renewals done on the site simple and fast for County personnel.

This initiative is the latest project in a successful partnership between Shelby County and Ingenuity.  “We know firsthand the efficiency and customer service gains available from utilizing good software solutions,” said Kirk Browne, Vice President of Operations at Ingenuity.  “Shelby County has been recognized for years as a leader in the utilization of technology for local governments, and we enjoy working with such a progressive and forward-thinking organization.”
